I was diagnosed with ADHD back when I was around 16 or 17. I have a lot of years of personal experience with it. Beyond my own experience, I am endlessly curious about the common experiences that others with ADHD go through.

  • One of the most common challenges for those with ADHD, is the ability to begin something.
  • Another one is the ability to remain focused on that thing and tune out distractions.

While everyone struggles with these two challenges from time to time, it is noticeably more difficult for those with executive functioning issues.

So what I’m recommending today is valuable for everyone, but especially so for my neurodivergent peers.

Though I am now happily back on ADHD medication, I spent many years of my life unmedicated. For this reason, I’ve had to develop various strategies, processes, and habits to kick start my brain and focus. While I have probably lost the battle with my brain more times than I have won, it has gotten progressively easier.

Focusing Strategies

One successful strategy that I continue to use, is to create a trigger for certain types of behavior or thinking, and then use that trigger over and over until it works reliably.

To date, I have not found anything more effective than noise cancelling headphones with the right type of music.

For years this meant the Lo-Fi Cat Girl on Youtube.

Either that or a playlist of ambient, melodic, lo-fi music.

Then, I discovered Brain.FM. I signed up for their trial and within 60-minutes, I was so blown away that I purchased the year plan. That was 82 weeks ago. I know because I have been using it almost daily since I found it.

In a world with countless applications and programs, there are truly not many that I would recommend more highly than Brain.FM.

Brain.FM touts itself as “music scientifically proven to increase focus.”

Whether you are swayed by my own experience or their science, if you struggle with your focus, I hope you will give it a shot. It has undeniably changed my life for the better.
